NAGAR (Nagar Association of Greater American Regions) convey best wishes to all our community members on this auspiciious day and pray our Lord Hatkeshwar to bless our Nagar community in USA and globally!

The festival is also known as Hatkeshwar Patotsav and is celebrated today on Chaitra Shukla Chaudas, the fourteenth day during the waxing phase of moon in Chaitra month in Gujarat and many part of India. It is the date of incarnation of Lord Hatkeshwar....!

Nagar community in USA, Australia, Dubai and other part of world outside India, also, celebrates the Patotsav on or around this date. Nagar Association of Texas-Houston (NATH) and other organization celebrated it on Sunday, March 28, 2010 while others have planned on upcoming weekends in April.

But Ahmedabad knew how to do business with foreigners then.

Mahatma Gandhi and his idea of prohibition were yet to dawn 150 years ago. In the wake of the hooch tragedy, those calling for freeing wine and beer from the purview of Gujarat's dry laws today should gain inspiration from the celebrations which Ranchhodlal unleashed in front of his British guests at the inauguration of the Ahmedabad Spinning and Weaving Mill.

Business historian Makrand Mehta has noted in his book "Indian merchants and entrepreneurs in historical perspective": The mill was now ready to start production.

The leading citizens of Ahmedabad assembled on the mill premises to watch the opening ceremony on 30 May, 1861. they included-persons from all walks of life - teachers, medical practitioners, businessmen, lawyers, government officials, and artisans. The English officials, mostly with their families, were special guests. The company's promoters had stocked liquor bottles for them to celebrate the occasion. The giant wheels started roaring in the midst of loud cheers as Edigton's wife cracked a bottle on the ground. The speeches which followed were full of praise for Ranchhodlal.

Edigton was the technocrat who trained workers to work on the machine.

Ranchhodlal Chhotalal founded the first textile mill in Ahmedabad 150 years ago and the rest is history.

Incidentally, Ranchhodlal himself was a teetotaller and staunch Nagar Brahmin.

A fourteenth century Nagar tradition of Betha Garaba was presented during Ahmedabad Heritage Festival. This was arranged in renowned Hatkeshwar Mahadev temple in Desai Pole, Khadia, Ahmedabad.

The tradition of Betha Garaba is very popular amongst nagar families in many cities in USA during navaratri. Local nagar associations and many nagar families have continued the tradition for more than 3 decades in USA. Recently a Betha Garaba was organized by Nagar Association Maryland (NAM) on October 12, 2008 in Greater Baltimore Temple. Nagar Association of Greater American Regions (NAGAR) congratulate NAM to continue such historical nagar tradition of Betha Garaba and celebrate it in the temple. Earlier in Maryland; it was organized by Jagrutiben Desai, Hemaxiben Munshi, Hemanginiben Vaishnav, Vandanaben Kharod, Anjaniben Anjaria, Hinaben Badashah, Deviben Mehta and many families in their home or a small hall. We are planning a meeting on July 4th with the leaders of regional Nagar Chapters who are attending the Convention in Chicago to collect community feedback about NAGAR vision and strategy. Please remember, this is ONLY a start of the journey and not the destination.

Based on our understanding, the following key individuals are attending the convention (please forgive us if we missed a few Nagar leaders).

East: Names: Udaybhai, Sunilbhai, Ashwinbhai, Himanshubhai
Midwest: Names: Ujjwalbhai, Ratnakarbhai, Senajitbhai, Dhimantbhai
West: Names: Kinjalben, Yatinbhai, Manojbhai
South: Names: Nitinbhai

If we missed any names of the leaders who are attending the Convention, please forgive us for an inadvertent error since itʼs totally unintended. Kindly let us know that you will be attending via a phone call to Ratnakarbhai, Ujjwalbhai, Udaybhai, Sunilbhai, or Nitinbhai, and we will look forward to your input, participation and leadership.

We will announce a reformatted NAGAR executive committee as soon as practical after the successful completion of the Convention in Chicago.
